Two charged in drug raid in Winona, Minnesota

Two suspects arrested during a police search Friday appeared Monday in Winona District Court, Minnesota. Mark Anthony Eggerson, 18, and Tena Marie Carpenter, 24, both of 376 Minnesota St. Apt. B, were charged with drug-related offenses. Judge Jeffrey Thompson set Eggerson's bail at $50,000 cash or corporate security bond, and Carpenter's bail at $20,000 cash or corporate security bond.
Eggerson is charged with fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance resulting from the drug bust. He also is charged with three separate counts of selling cocaine to a police informant during June and July of this year.

Eggerson has three prior controlled substance convictions. His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 7. Carpenter is charged with fifth-degree possession of cocaine.

"I was never in possession of anything, and I don't understand where these charges came from," Carpenter said in court. Her next court appearance is Aug. 5.

Carpenter also is scheduled to appear in court for possession of tear gas, which she was prohibited to have because of a controlled substance conviction in 1999.

Both Eggerson and Carpenter asked for applications for a public defender because they could not afford lawyers. On Monday, neither of the suspects had legal representation.

Eggerson and Carpenter were arrested Friday when Winona, Minnesota police and the Winona County Sheriff's Department executed a drug raid at the apartment. Six suspects were taken into custody.

During the search, police found three separate portions of plastic bags "typical of items used to package crack cocaine for sale," an electronic scale with residue that field-tested positive for cocaine, two separate trace amounts of cocaine, two attached paper plates with a trace amount of cocaine and $10,000 under a mattress, according to the criminal complaint. All of the items were found in the east bedroom where Eggerson and Carpenter were found.

Carpenter said the money under the mattress was to pay for a lawyer for Michael A. Alexander, who is awaiting trial in La Crosse, Wis., on first-degree intentional homicide charges. Eggerson and Carpenter used to live at 568 W. Sanborn St., where police say they planned to execute a search warrant May 31. Instead, Winona, Minnesota police assisted the La Crosse, Wis., police in apprehending Alexander in the Sanborn Street house.

Crystal Carpenter, the renter of the Minnesota Street house, admitted having knowledge of Eggerson selling drugs out of the house, the complaint said.

In an unrelated incident, Eggerson was cited for leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving stemming from an incident last Tuesday when a vehicle crashed into a Kwik Trip on Sixth and Baker streets.
