Minnesota Man Among 13 Indicted In Multistate Drug RingXavier Rene Munoz, 27, of Moorhead, Minnesota, the first of the group to appear in court, is charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute drugs. U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson ordered Munoz to remain jailed pending a detention hearing Thursday.
A 45-count indictment unsealed Tuesday said Munoz was part of a drug-trafficking ring that shipped meth, cocaine, heroin and marijuana from California and distributed the drugs in the Fargo area, as well as in Duluth, Minnesota, on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in north central North Dakota, and in Nevada.
The investigation began in the Fargo area but grew into a national case, U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley said.
Law enforcement officials in Fresno, Calif., arrested Alejandrino Angulo Guerrero, who is named in the indictment as the drug ring's "leader and organizer."
Police made other arrests Tuesday, but not all the people named in the indictment have been arrested, Wrigley said.
Ruben Hernandez, a Moorhead resident and convicted drug dealer, controlled the group's drug distribution in the Fargo-Moorhead area, the indictment says.
Hernandez, 37, was convicted of selling marijuana in November 2001, but he continued to direct drug sales from prison, Minnesota authorities say.
While Hernandez was incarcerated, Gilbert Flores, of Moorhead, "assumed the day-to-day management and supervision," the indictment says.
Adrian Steven Morin, 27, of Fargo, was the organizer of drug sales on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation, the indictment says.
Morin also is charged with conspiracy and drug dealing. He faces another charge of carrying a revolver during drug trafficking.
"The sophistication of this organization is alarming," Wrigley said. "We have by no means book-ended this investigation. It continues on in high gear."
Authorities are seeking to seize some of Guerrero's Fresno assets. The indictment says two California homes and $2 million in cash can be linked to drug trafficking.
Others named in the indictment are Jeremy Arlen Crist of Fargo, Lanny James Kenner of Devils Lake, Antonio Jose Alonzo of Glyndon, Minn., Scott Mark Larson of Moorhead, Harold James Schultz of Hawley, Minn., Oscar Flores of Moorhead, Christopher Ray Pulling of Duluth and Eva Rivera Gonzalez of Carrizo Springs, Texas.
