Meth high leads to problems for users in Minnesota

There are people in Aitkin County, Minnesota who have spent $100,000 a year on methamphetamine.

In doing so, many have lost their health, their money and their families.

What is this drug that would make someone risk all that is important to them?

Methamphetamine is a potent central nervous system stimulant that can be smoked, snorted, injected or swallowed. Minnesota users refer to meth as “crank,” “speed,” “crystal” and “ice.” “Ecstasy” is also a form of meth.

It’s easy to produce, relatively affordable to buy and the euphoria lasts longer than other street drugs.

It is also extremely addicting.

The success rate for overcoming an addiction to meth is between 3 percent and 10 percent, according to Lonnie Jensen, (pictured) who was a chemical dependency counselor at Brainerd Regional Human Services Center from 1985 to 2001. He is now a social worker for Aitkin County, Minnesota.

That rate can be compared to a success rate between 15 percent and 20 percent for alcohol addiction.

“It’s becoming an epidemic,” said Jensen, who said he completes about 200 chemical dependency evaluations every year.

“If the person is under 30, there is a high probability that their drug of choice is meth,” he said. In 1985, Jensen said that almost all clients he saw were alcohol or marijuana users. Now, 75 percent of his clients are meth users. The majority are women.

People take meth because of the euphoria and energy that results. The “high” is similar to cocaine in its effect, but lasts much longer.

“Housewives use it for a diet drug and they can get their houses cleaned,” said Jensen.

What many don’t know when they take this drug is that it can cause heart damage, loss of calcium from bones, dental troubles or loss of teeth, severe weight loss, open sores, psychosis, liver damage or, with the use of dirty needles, Hepatitis C or AIDs.
