Minnesota statewide Ads to Promote QUITPLAN(SM) Stop-Smoking ProgramsSAINT PAUL, Minnesota - The Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco (MPAAT) today will launch a statewide ad campaign to promote one of the country's most comprehensive programs to help individuals quit smoking. Branded under the QUITPLAN name, the stop-smoking services include the toll-free QUITPLAN Helpline (1-888-354-PLAN) and the website quitplan.com. Services soon to be added include a worksite stop-smoking program and centers in health care settings.
The ad campaign's theme is "What's Your Plan?" The theme is designed to show smokers that there are more effective ways to quit smoking than simply trying to do it on their own. On average, it takes a smoker 4-5 attempts to quit. The Surgeon General has equated the grip of nicotine addiction to cocaine and heroin. The ads give smokers a resource to create an individualized plan that fits their needs -- the QUITPLAN program.
The campaign -- the only one of its kind in Minnesota -- will reach people using multiple forms of media including television, print publications and transit advertising. The campaign centerpieces are two separate television commercials titled "Wolf" and "The Wall."
"Wolf" features a man who has gone so far as to train a live wolf to guard his cigarettes so that he can't reach them and he will be forced to quit. The ad recognizes the temptation smokers face but offers them the alternative of calling the QUITPLAN Helpline or visiting quitplan.com, rather than relying on an outrageous method.
"The Wall" shows a woman facing a rock wall that appears to be insurmountable. But once the woman looks for help, she finds it and is able to start her climb to the top. The wall symbolizes the challenge that smokers face in trying to quit and shows that help is available through the QUITPLAN program.
The campaign was created and developed in Minnesota by Clarity Coverdale Fury Inc., a Minneapolis, Minnesota advertising agency. Clarity Coverdale Fury has worked with Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco on other anti-tobacco advertisements, many of which have received national recognition. The ad campaign runs through June 2004.
Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco is an independent, non-profit organization that improves the health of Minnesota by reducing the harm caused by tobacco. Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco serves Minnesota through its grant-making program, individual stop-smoking services and statewide outreach activities. It is funded with a portion of the state's tobacco settlement.
