Minnesota city to receive grant for anti-drug programsBloomington, Minnesota is to receive a $100,000 federal grant for anti-drug abuse programs, the office of U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton announced recently.
The money will go toward the city’s efforts to reduce substance abuse among youth, the senator’s office stated. The grant is part of a larger national effort to promote community anti-drug coalitions across the country.
“Bloomington, Minnesota parents, teachers and community leaders are currently working together on drug prevention programs that are essential in keeping our kids safe and off drugs,” Dayton said in a prepared statement. “This grant will enable these concerned Bloomington, Minnesota residents to have the resources needed to combat drug, alcohol, and tobacco in their community.”
The grant will provide resources to create anti-drug coalitions, which represent a cross section of parents, youth, teachers, religious and fraternal organizations, health care and business professionals, law enforcement agencies, the media, and community leaders. All of these groups work together to develop prevention programs for local schools and provide educational training to community members on their role in responding to substance and drug abuse.
Created under the Drug-Free Communities Act of 1997, the program has earned bipartisan support from Congress. In December 2001, Congress passed, and the president signed into law, a five-year extension of the Drug-Free Communities Act authorizing $399 million in funds through fiscal year 2007.
