Cleaning up meth labs in Mower County, MinnesotaIn 2003, one out of ten meth labs in Minnesota was found in Mower County, Minnesota and that community wants to pass an ordinance to make sure those sites get cleaned up.
Meth is mostly made from common household products but when the ingredients are cooked together, they make a dangerous drug and a potentially harmful chemical mixture that can remain in a home for years after this cooking is over.
On Tuesday the Mower County, Minnesota board heard a presentation on the effects of meth and how the chemicals used to produce it can infect homes. If passed, the ordinance would require homeowners where methamphetamine is or was once made to clean up the drug mess, no matter the cost.Deborah Durkin of the Minnesota Health Department presented the findings to the board and says the effects of meth are not limited to users.
"Contamination for meth labs stays behind years or months or even years after a lab is seized by law enforcement so we have many, many, many families in Minnesota living in places where meth was cooked," said Durkin.
"It's important because you have unsuspecting people who move into a house or an apartment that may had been used as a meth house or a meth lab in the past. And all of the chemicals are still in the walls if it is not properly cleaned up," said attorney Patrick Flanagan. Drug Rehab by County
